Dr. Flavia Nelson is a Neurologist specializing in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune disorders of the brain. She is the Whigham-Berger Chair in Neuroimmunology, Professor of Neurology and the Director of the MS Center of Excellence, at the University of Miami.

After receiving her medical degree in Mexico, she completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and a Neurology residency and fellowship in MS with focus on imaging, at The University of Texas in Houston where she became the Interim Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Group and co-directed the MRI-Analysis Center until 2017. In 2018 she became the Chief of the MS Division at University of Minnesota and was a member of the prestigious CMRR where she focused on ultra-high field (7T and 10.5T) MRI research. She moved to FL in 2022


Dr. Nelson is a trailblazer in MRI findings in cognitive impairment in MS, has been in leadership roles in several organizations related to Multiple Sclerosis and Neurology including AAN, CMSC, and National MS Society and has participated in many clinical trials for FDA approval of MS medications. She is currently involved in clinical trials of stem cell transplant in relapsing and progressive MS.
