Emmanuel Thomas MD, PhD, FAASLD is a tenured associate professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in the Department of Pathology. Dr. Thomas is a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (FAASLD) and is the Chair of the National Board of Directors for the American Liver Foundation. In addition, he is the UM CFAR HIV Co-Morbidities/Co-Infections working group leader, a member of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (Cancer Prevention Program) and Co-Director of the CLIA certified Diagnostic Hepatology Research Laboratory and House Physician in the Schiff Center for Liver Diseases. He was recruited back to the University of Miami to establish a clinical research laboratory focused on viral hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma and innate immunity/host defense against viral pathogens. Since he was raised in Miami and obtained his MD and PhD research training at UMiami, he is committed to improving the treatment of viral illnesses and associated cancers in the South Florida area. Postdoctoral training was obtained at the NIH/NIDDK in the Liver Diseases Branch with Jake Liang and at UNC-Chapel Hill with Michael Fried. Dr. Thomas has an established and integrated, multidisciplinary research program in viral pathogenesis, liver disease and HCC that is funded by the NIH through a five-year, renewable Outstanding Investigator Award (R35) and a separate R01. He is a standing member of the NIH Study Section HIV, Coinfections and Cancer (HCAC).
