Overview
The University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine proudly presents the Miami Pathology Conference On The Beach hosted by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This is the 49th in a series of courses conducted by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The course seeks to improve the diagnostic skills of practicing pathologists, pathologists in training and other health care professionals by focusing on the latest information, diagnostic criteria and techniques relevant to daily practice. Participants are exposed to a panel of distinguished faculty – all leaders in their field. The foundation of the meeting is robust educational programming offering new information in the areas of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with emphasis this year on bone and soft tissue pathology, breast and gynecologic pathology, cytopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, head and neck pathology, immunohistochemistry, laboratory management and test utilization, and molecular studies. This five-day course features didactic multidisciplinary lectures and case presentations.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify different types of malignant and benign gynecological lesions
  2. Illustrate the role of biomarkers in the diagnosis of gynecological tumors
  3. Analyze current guidelines and diagnostic criteria to direct appropriate interventions for genitourinary cancer patients
  4. Identify the pathological features of common liver diseases and potential therapies to treat liver disease.
  5. Update participants on the latest biomarkers in cytopathology, including how to identify and interpret them.
  6. Review current guidelines for biomarker-based NSCLC treatment planning
  7. Demonstrate best practices for obtaining and preparing cytology specimens to ensure they are suitable for molecular testing
  8. Identify common errors and challenges in breast core needle biopsy samples and in the interpretation of results
  9. Identify the role of emerging biomarkers in the prognosis and treatment of triple-negative breast carcinoma
  10. Differentiate between benign and malignant papillary breast lesions
  11. Identify the early signs of lung disease in pathological specimen
  12. Recognize the importance of the pathologists’ role in the patient care team and how their work impacts patients' lives beyond the laboratory
  13. Describe the global variability in the epidemiology, presentation, and biological behavior of common extracranial pediatric solid tumors, including neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, and rhabdomyosarcoma and hepatoblastoma
  14. Identify and interpret key histopathological features in liver biopsies of neonates and infants
  15. Recognize common diagnostic pitfalls in bone tumor evaluation to avoid errors in clinical practice
