Overview

This course will provide an updated overview of emerging concepts in multiple sclerosis (MS) and related immune-mediated disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). Novel therapies for MS continue to be developed, each with unique mechanisms of action. While significant progress has been made in reducing relapse rates, progressive forms of the disease remain a major area of unmet need. The course will explore recent advancements in managing progressive MS, including detailed discussions of successful Phase 3 clinical trials

The program will include real-world case studies highlighting challenging diagnostic and therapeutic scenarios. Interactive sessions, including case presentations, faculty-led discussions, panel debates, and Q&A segments, will provide opportunities for direct engagement and knowledge exchange between faculty and attendees.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Assess the MRI criteria and spinal fluid for diagnosis of MS using the most appropriate and current sequences
  2. Evaluate the new criteria and how to use the paraclinical testing which includes magnetic resonance imaging and spinal fluid analysis
  3. Examine the advances made in cell-based therapies which include CAR-T cells and stem cell therapies
  4. Examine the current status of disease-modifying therapies in MS
  5. Apply the international criteria for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis to facilitate early and appropriate diagnosis to institute disease-modifying therapies early and appropriately
  6. Diagnose MS appropriate and institute treatment early to minimize long-term disability using the current criteria
  7. Develop a clinical plan to identify and diagnose early features suggestive of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (NMOSD) based on knowledge of the current diagnostic criteria and how these differ from criteria to diagnose MS or other CNS autoimmune disorders
  8. Consider neuroimmunologic mechanisms of action, the pathogenetic role of complement, and evidence for efficacy to assess the risk versus benefit of available and pending disease modifying therapy (DMT) for NMOSD
  9. Recognize and differentiate between the clinical presentations of optic neuritis that are more likely to involve anti-MOG antibodies compared to other causes, such as neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) or multiple sclerosis
  10. Distinguish the key clinical features that differentiate NMOSD from MOGAD, with a particular focus on the characteristic manifestations and diagnostic criteria of each disorder
  11. Appropriately diagnosis and distinguish MS from NMOSD in patients considering family planning
  12. Assess the mechanisms underlying complications of checkpoint therapies decide which antibodies to examine for specific encephalitis
